The Space Needle in Seattle is truly a wonder of modern engineering. It is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and the symbol of Seattle. Located in Seattle Center, it was built for the 1962 World’s Fair.
The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet (160 m) that offers visitors a 360 degree view of the Seattle skyline. The SkyCity restaurant at 500 feet (152 m) can be described as a buffet coupled with a breathtaking 360 degree view. Most of the ingredients used in the food are sourced from in around the Seattle area such as Salmon harvested from local waters and berries picked from abundant Pacific Northwest fields. The gift shop offers you the chance to buy a souvenir to remember the adventure; most mementos are custom designed with the space needle logo.
From the top of the Needle, you can see not only the Downtown Seattle skyline, but also the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands. Visitors to the Space needle can reach the top via elevators that travel at 10 mph (16 km/h). This trip takes 43 seconds and sometimes tourists have to wait in hour-long queues in order to ascend to the top of the tower.
Every year on New Year’s Eve, the Space Needle celebrates with a fireworks show at midnight that is synchronized to music. Last year’s show stopped, restarted, and then stopped again with the rest of the pyrotechnics needing to be detonated by hand. Yet, it was still a breathtaking firework’s display.
The space needle’s location in downtown Seattle in the famous Seattle Center also enables you to fully experience the Experience Music Project. A 90 second monorail ride will transport you to the Pike Place Market, waterfront, and shopping malls. A number of hotels in Seattle can also be found in close vicinity to the Space Needle.
